SEO for Bing
Microsoft's stance on search engine optimization really doesn't appear to be all that different from Google's. You're not going to get the same results on both Google and Bing in many cases, but that is after all why the two can co-exist. The real difference is in how the results are presented, and not as much in how the two determine quality and relevancy.

Bing and Google have separate algorithms, but both like quality, relevant links and good content, as opposed to deception and spam. Bing in fact, hasn't really changed much (from Live Search) in terms of crawling.

Microsoft warns of serious computer security hole
Microsoft Corp. has taken the rare step of warning about a serious computer security vulnerability it hasn't fixed yet.
The vulnerability disclosed Monday affects Internet Explorer users whose computers run the Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 operating software.
It can allow hackers to remotely take control of victims' machines. The victims don't need to do anything to get infected except visit a Web site that's been hacked.
Security experts say criminals have been attacking the vulnerability for nearly a week. Thousands of sites have been hacked to serve up malicious software that exploits the vulnerability. People are drawn to these sites by clicking a link in spam e-mail.
The so-called "zero day" vulnerability disclosed by Microsoft affects a part of its software used to play video. The problem arises from the way the software interacts with Internet Explorer, which opens a hole for hackers to tunnel into.
Microsoft urged vulnerable users to disable the problematic part of its software, which can be done from Microsoft's Web site, while the company works on a "patch" — or software fix — for the problem.
Microsoft rarely departs from its practice of issuing security updates the second Tuesday of each month. When the Redmond, Wash.-based company does issue security reminders at other times, it's because the vulnerabilities are very serious.
A recent example was the emergency patch Microsoft issued in October for a vulnerability that criminals exploited to infect millions of PCs with the Conficker worm. While initially feared as an all-powerful doomsday device, that network of infected machines was eventually used for mundane moneymaking schemes like sending spam and pushing fake antivirus software.

Gmail loses beta label; Google "removes doubt" that Apps are enterprise ready
It’s one little word - but its presence can make all the difference in the world.

In the tech world, that single word - Beta - suggests that a product is still undergoing tests and not quite ready for prime time. In most cases, beta periods can last a few weeks or a few months until the final release version is available.
Today, five years after its release, Google’s Gmail has officially shed the Beta label, along with a handful of other Google Apps. For the users, it won’t mean much. Gmail and the other apps will look the same and work the same.

But for Google, the dumping of the label is the equivalent of unlocking the gates to the enterprise, a move that should “remove any doubt that Apps is a mature product suite,” the company said.

ActiveX Shark Stalks IE Surfers
Microsoft has warned Web surfers that an unused ActiveX control in Internet Explorer could let hackers launch malicious code on the user's system if it's running an older OS like Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. Hackers have reportedly already begun exploiting the vulnerability, and security experts predict the attacks could get worse. Microsoft has posted a fix for the problem online

Hardware makers support Google OS
Google has announced which hardware firms have pledged to build machines that will run its Chrome OS.
The search giant said it was working with many firms on Chrome OS hardware including Acer, Asus, Freescale, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, and Toshiba.
It is a web centered OS and it was most likely to appear on smaller portable computers known as netbooks as a start and then move to Desktop PCs.
The browser-based operating system will be released to the public in 2010.
In a blog post announcing the hardware partners, Google said that the code for the Chrome OS would be open sourced in late 2009. Google said that the software will be free to download and use.
The first netbooks that can run the software will be ready in late 2010. Since Asus launched the first netbook the cut-down computers have proved hugely popular.
Analyst firm Gartner predicts that 80% more netbooks will be sold in 2009 than sold in 2008. However, so far, the small computers only make up 8% of the total PC market.
The Chrome OS will be designed to work with Intel chips that appear in the vast majority of desktop PCs, laptops and netbooks as well as the Arm chips that power most of the world's mobile phones. Texas Instruments and Qualcomm, who both build devices based around Arm chips, were also unveiled as partners on the Chrome OS project.
In a blog post announcing some of the hardware partners, Google also said it was working with Adobe on the operating system. This could turn out to be significant because of the wide use of Adobe's Flash software.

Flash is used to power many multimedia websites but Adobe has been working hard to extend its capabilities via the Air technology and make it more web-centric too. Microsoft is developing its Silverlight technology to do a similar job.

Bing is Taking Feature Requests
Microsoft wants you to like Bing. If the company ever hopes to lure a significant enough amount of people away from Google, it has to deliver on user experience. For the most part the public's response to Bing in this area has so far been relatively positive.
Bing has set up a discussion page on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=70424008437&topic=9495

New Expression and Partners Also Announced

Microsoft has launched Silverlight 3 and Expression 3 today. Silverlight is a browser plug-in that enables companies to design, develop, and deliver web apps. Expression is a set of design tools and technologies.

The new Silverlight release in particular is big news. Over 1/3 of Internet devices have installed version 2 since its launch less than nine months ago.

Microsoft also announced that MGM and NBC Sports are using Silverlight for different forthcoming video efforts.

"NBC Sports has evaluated many different technologies for delivering high-quality experiences online, and none have delivered the video quality, scalability and business value that Microsoft Silverlight has consistently brought," said erkins Miller, senior vice president of Digital Media at NBC Sports. "As we look forward to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver as well as other major championships in 2010, we will be using Silverlight as the preferred technology to deliver the best in next-generation online high-definition video experiences."
StatCounter: Bing Back Above Yahoo
On a temporary basis, at least, it looks like the Bing team racked up another win this week. New data indicates that Microsoft's search engine passed Yahoo's in terms of market share, and did so by a significant amount.

StatCounter first found that Bing had passed Yahoo on June 4th (by a margin of 15.64 percent to 10.32 percent). That situation didn't last through the next day, though, with Yahoo quickly reestablishing dominance. Now, StatCounter believes Bing's climbed back on top.

According to the latest data, Bing's market share yesterday, July 9th, was 12.9 percent. Yahoo, by comparison, cornered just 10.15 percent of the market. This gives Bing a solid lead of 2.75 percent.
